Chennai Weather Forecast

Chennai has a tropical climate and experiences hot weather throughout the year except during the months from December to February when there is relatively cooler Chennai weather. Being a coastal city, humidity is also pretty high the year round.

There are no extreme variations in temperature in Chennai and the two main seasons are summer and monsoon. During the summer months (March to September) mean temperature hovers around 33 °C but it frequently soars to the mid and high 30’s. May and June are the hottest months and is definitely not the time to visit Chennai as mercury levels can exceed 40 °C on certain days. Light cotton clothing is an essential item in Chennai and it is vital to drink plenty of liquids to keep the body hydrated.

Monsoons start in October and end by mid-December. The city gets some heavy downpours during this period and records an average annual rainfall of around 1300 mm. Occasionally depressions in the Bay of Bengal also bring heavy rain and thundershowers to Chennai.

January and February are the best months to visit Chennai when average daily temperature is around 24 °C. Even at its coldest, temperature rarely falls below 18 °C in the city.
